BOCA RATON, Fla.- FAU would outlast Miami despite the Hurricanes outhitting them 9 to 8 in a huge 6-4 win Tuesday night.
Coming into this matchup, Miami had a wild three game series over the weekend against UVA where they stole two come from behind wins and took the series home 2-1. On the other hand, FAU won a three game series against FIU where they outscored the Panthers 30-10.
The first three innings saw a lot of action. FAU’s Emelio Gonzalez got the scoring started when he shot a single off the pitchers leg. Miami would respond quickly the next inning when Antonio Jimenez hit a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the game at one.
FAU would take the lead back in the bottom half of the inning with a Patrick Ward RBI single through the left side. Following the second inning, this game turned into a back and forth shootout.
The top of the third saw Miami third baseman Daniel Cuvet blast a solo home run to right center field to tie the game back up at two. Once AGAIN, FAU would respond quickly in the bottom of the inning with a Dylan LaPointe solo blast to left center field to regain the lead 3-2.
As if things couldn’t get any more wild, Miami would tie things up at three in the top of the fourth with the third solo homerun of the game, this time courtesy of catcher Jack Scanlon.
In the following half, the Owls would tack on two more runs to regain the lead on a two RBI single once again by Emelio Gonzalez to make it 5-3.
The fifth inning would be the first scoreless inning of the game. All year long, the theme for Miami has been playing games from behind and tonight was no different.
FAU would extend the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI triple from right fielder John Schroeder. The Hurricanes would get a run back in the top of the seventh with a single poked into right field by DH Lorenzo Carrier to cut the lead to 6-4.
FAU was very clutch in this game with runners in scoring position (4 for 11). Miami coming into this game was sixth in the nation in home runs and added two more tonight. FAU’s bullpen really shut things down after starter Zach Abbey got pulled in the third inning.
“They were fantastic tonight and you know what you want is for this to be a really good victory for later in the year… a good bullpen, you can ask any guy that’s ever managed to know there’s guys down there that can strike guys out and get out of innings is phenomenal,” FAU head coach John McCormack said after the game.
