The Florida Gators defeated the Texas A&M Aggies 41-24. Florida is now 5-4, and the Gators will play South Carolina at home next week. One more win would mean a bowl appearance for Florida; given the circumstances, Billy Napier has done an impressive job this season. It’s not easy to win at Kyle Field, and the Gators dominated the game in all three phases. Here’s a quick recap of Florida’s win over Texas A&M.
Florida’s Run Game is Strong
The running back duo in Montrell Johnson Jr. and Trevor Etienne ran all over the Aggies’ defense on Saturday morning. They combined for 180 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Anthony Richardson played much better in this game than against Georgia, scoring four total touchdowns.
Initially, Florida’s offense appeared to be in trouble with Justin Shorter out for this game. However, Ricky Pearsall, Xzavier Henderson, and Ja’Quavion Fraziars stepped up, and they were frequently utilized in both the running and passing games. The offense appeared to be much more open due to the balance and fluidity of play-calling.
Defense Improving Every Week
This game had the feel of a shootout at the half when A&M was up 24-20. Regardless, Florida’s defense responded well, and the Gators limited the Aggies rushing game and the secondary was on lockdown. Florida really just needs to improve on third down and take the playmakers on the opposing team out of the game.
Once Moose Muhammad III and Devon Achane were taken out of the picture, A&M struggled to move the ball down the field. Even with the departure of Brenton Cox Jr. this past week, the Gators were able to generate good pass rush against the Aggies’ horrid defensive line. If each unit on the defensive side does its job, Florida’s defense will only get better towards the end of the season.
Concluding Thoughts
After an enormous win over Texas A&M, Florida is definitely capable of finishing this season with an 8-4 record. Richardson was more consistent, and he is slowly getting to that next level thanks to Napier trusting the offense. A victory over the Gamecocks next Saturday would grant the Gators bowl eligibility, which means more practices and preparation for this young team.
However, do not get too excited Gator fans. Texas A&M had a flu outbreak, and therefore had a ton of players out.
