Florida State Wins Back and Forth Battle Over Miami, 31-28

For the first time since 2016, the Florida State Seminoles have defeated the Miami Hurricanes. When the final whistle blew at Doak Campbell Stadium, the scoreboard read 31-28. The Seminoles would be led by their QB Jordan Travis, who would complete 18 of 26 passes for 274 yards, while running 22 times for 62 yards and two touchdowns. With the Seminoles win, they remain in the hunt for bowl eligibility, improving to 4-6 (3-4 in the ACC).

Miami:

The Hurricanes, once again, started off very slow. After going down 17-0 in the first half, Miami would strike its first touchdown with 3:35 in the second quarter, with a connector from Tyler Van Dyke to Key’Shawn Smith for a five-yard touchdown reception. Despite a slow start for Tyler Van Dyke, with two interceptions in the first half, he would come back strong, eventually completing 25 of 47 passes for 312 yards, including all four of Miami’s touchdowns.

In the third quarter, a pass that was deflected would fall into Mike Harley’s hands which would cut the lead to six, 20-14.

Jaylan Knighton would also have a great game, with two receptions for 64 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown pass. Charleston Rambo would have six receptions for 95 yards, but ultimately it would not be enough to close out the Seminoles.

Miami would have 14 penalties for 105 yards, and three first half turnovers, which would ultimately cost them the important game.

In a season where it seemed lost after an 0-4 start, the Seminoles dominated in a game against their in-state rivals.

The Seminoles would get off to a very fast start Saturday afternoon, and it would start on their first drive. Carried by five Miami penalties and a 30-yard pass to Treshaun Ward, Jordan Travis would walk in for a two-yard touchdown to make it 7-0.

After a fumble on a Jermaine Johnson strip sack on Miami QB Tyler Dyke, Florida State would extend the lead to 14-0 when Jashaun Corbin ran 12 yards up the edge. Corbin had 15 carries for 68 yards and a touchdown, while also recording two receptions for 15 yards.

After falling behind 28-20 in the fourth quarter, it would be all Seminoles. Florida State would cut the Miami lead to 28-23 with 4:48 left in the game. Florida State would get a major stop on the next Miami drive, and after a Ja’Khi Douglas 58-yard completion, and a key 4th and 14 conversion, Jordan Travis would run in for a QB sneak to give FSU the lead, and ultimately the win.

Next Up

The Hurricanes will head back to Miami to play Virginia Tech. For the Seminoles, they travel to Chestnut Hill to play Boston College.
