Chubba Purdy Transfers Amid QB Competition in Tallahassee

After an early college career plagued by injury and sideline appearances, Florida State QB Chubba Purdy has decided to enter the transfer portal. Purdy — a redshirt freshman — made three showings in games at FSU, making a start in one of those. Experts predicted that he could earn the starting job as early as this season, but he has since moved on in light of minimal playing time.

“I want to thank the Seminole fans and Florida State community for all their support during my time at Florida State,” Purdy wrote on Twitter. “After careful consideration and a discussion with my family, I will be moving on towards new beginnings.”

The former four-star quarterback entered his tenure in 2020 as a member of Mike Norvell’s first-ever recruiting class at Tallahassee. He was ranked as the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback nationwide with a top 200 player rating overall, but a broken collarbone injury inhibited his playing time prior to the season.

Florida State is now down to three scholarship quarterbacks — Jordan Travis, McKenzie Milton and Tate Rodemaker — as a consequence of Purdy’s transfer. With Milton out next year, the ‘Noles are expected to look to Jordan Travis and AJ Duffy (a four-star recruit out of IMG Academy) for the majority of snaps. Travis has played in seven games so far in 2021, sporting 66 completions for 812 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season. He produced a 176 yard, two touchdown performance just this past week at Clemson.

Duffy, on the other hand, represents one of Norvell’s most highly touted recruits. The No. 107 overall player (8th in quarterbacks, 17th in state of Florida) in the 2022 college football recruiting class plans to enroll early at FSU after going down to injury in his final season at IMG (8-0, No. 2 in the MaxPreps nationwide high school football rankings).

“We’re all pretty much locked in,” Duffy said to NoleGameday in an interview regarding the status of FSU’s recruits. “Everyone that I’ve talked to, no one has wavered or anything like that. That’s dope to see that we all want to go to FSU regardless of how the season goes. We know that we can’t really control how this season is going, we can only control what we do when we get there.”

Among Duffy’s most notable accolades include an Elite 11 Finals appearance (Quarterback competition involving most prestigious high school quarterbacks across the country) and an 11-1 team-leading record in his sophomore season when he threw for over 2,500 yards on 185 completions and 26 touchdowns.
