Dolphins Hire QB Coach Charlie Frye as Tua’s New Mentor

The Miami Dolphins have hired former Central Michigan Offensive Coordinator, Charlie Frye, hoping he can groom their No. 5 draft pick for years to come.

Frye as a Player

Charlie Frye started at quarterback for the University of Akron football team from 2001-2004. In his football career at Akron, Frye threw 913 passes for 11,049 yards and 64 touchdowns with a 63.6% completion rate. All of these were new school records.

In the 2005 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns took Frye with the 67th overall pick. After making it to the league, Frye played 5 seasons starting 23 games with the Browns, Seahawks, and Raiders before retiring due to injury.

Coaching Career

In 2018, Frye was named the Wide Receiver Coach for Ashland University. Frye rose quickly after this. Once Central Michigan saw his coaching abilities, they hired Frye as their Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach. In his year at CMU, Frye’s offense put up 435.2 yards per game while his quarterbacks had a 61.3% completion rate and 252.2 passing yards per game.

Frye also has connections with the golden boy, Tua Tagovailoa. When Tua was in high school he went to the Elite 11 7-on-7 tournament camp. While Tua played in the Elite 11 tourney his team was coached by Frye. Meaning he has seen the Dolphins star up close. The fact that Frye has coached Tua in the past, no matter how brief the stint, will help the Dolphins tremendously.

After Frye?

With the coaching market getting thinner and thinner each day, the Dolphins still have yet to hire an Offensive Coordinator. For one reason, they need to get someone to be able to meet and work with Frye and Tua. Most importantly is the draft. The Dolphins must get a full coaching staff together to scout and evaluate players for the 2021 NFL Draft. Not to mention it is highly speculated that the Dolphins will use this draft to bulk up their offense and build around Tua

Frye was a great hire, but the Dolphins need to find an OC to put with him and Tua very soon.
