Nikita Kucherov is known for not liking change. He has been rolling on the same routine for years when it comes to his pre-season preparation, rituals, nutrition, and even media resistance.
He admitted it himself at media day back in September. It’s not about his age or lack of motivation. The 32-year-old right winger knows himself and what’s best for his body. So, he doesn’t overdo anything.
The three-time Art Trophy winner explained his preferred techniques for preparing for the season. He doesn’t lift weights anymore. Instead, he focuses on stretching and mobility, both on and off the ice. He shoots for hours and skates almost all year long.
“I used to try getting bigger and stronger, jump higher, and run faster, but it never worked for me. I got hurt,” Kucherov said. “I stopped lifting and doing any gym activities. Stretching, taking care of his hips and lower back, and preventing injuries are priorities.”
Kucherov had to deal with an unplanned change in his routine. For years, his off-season shooting partner and mentor was the 2004 Stanley Cup winner, Dmitri Afanasenkov. The Tampa Bay Lightning alum moved to Connecticut to coach the Mid Fairfield Juniors. It’s unknown how Kucherov plans to amend his future training. He is one of the best NHL players who recently joined the 1000-point club. But he isn’t up to his own standards and not in the Top 10.
Jack Eichel of the Vegas Golden Knights is leading the all-scoring ranking with 19 points (8 goals) and +7 in 10 games. Brad Marchand of the Florida Panthers is #40 with 11 points (5 goals) and -3 in 10 contests. The Lightning star is #45 with 10 points.
Kucherov has four goals and 23 shots in eight games this season compared to eight goals and 30 shots in the first eight contests last season. Kucherov strives for excellence. It’s exciting to see how he will try to figure this one out.
